One of the most popular supplements on the market today are pre-workouts. Pre-workouts are designed to help enhance workout performance, and heighten and stimulate your nervous system and physiological processes during your training sessions.
 
In amongst an often huge list of ingredients, designed to buffer lactic effects, improve endurance and increase blood flow during your training, some of the most popular pre-workouts on the market will add in generous servings of caffeine making their formula what’s known as a stim-based formula. The main stimulant ingredient is usually Caffeine Anhydrous.
 
 
SO WHAT IS CAFFEINE?
Caffeine is a natural substance found in the seeds and leaves of certain plants. Caffeine Anhydrous is extracted from these plants once they have been dehydrated. This produces a highly concentrated caffeine powder and this is what’s in your stim-based pre-workouts.
 
 
HOW DOES CAFFEINE WORK?
When you ingest your stim-based pre-workout supplement, the performance-enhancing ingredients go to your working muscles to have them do their thing while the caffeine hitches a ride to your brain via your bloodstream - there it interacts with adenosine, a compound that’s present in your brain. Adenosine is what slows you down and makes you sleepy, eventually helping you fall asleep later in the day. Caffeine basically blocks adenosine effects in your brain and helps to liven things up. HOW DOES CAFFEINE BENEFIT YOUR TRAINING?
  • First, the nervous system - caffeine activates areas of your nervous system to improve focus and energy.
  • Caffeine increases circulating adrenaline, which can increase performance.
  • Increased fat burning - caffeine may increase your body’s ability to burn fat by increasing the breakdown of fat in fat cells. 
  • The endorphin effect - beta-endorphins can increase feelings of wellness and give you the exercise “high” that people often experience during training - making your sessions feel a lot more enjoyable.
  • Muscle efficiency - caffeine can improve muscle performance through activation of the central nervous system
  • Glycogen sparing - meaning caffeine may also spare muscle carb stores, primarily due to increased fat burning. This in turn can enhance endurance performance.
 
 
CAFFEINE SIDE EFFECTS
At a sensible dose, caffeine can provide many benefits with few side effects. Those who are caffeine sensitive may experience feelings of anxiety, increased heart rate, irritability, and some stomach discomfort. If this is the case a lower dose could fix the issues - or perhaps a stim-free pre-workout is the better option.
